NEW CUMBERLAND

PRIVATE RESIDENCE

CDA was hired by a couple shortly after their purchase of a low-slung 1958 brick home near the Susquehanna River. An array of design problems were tackled as the couple looked to modify the house to their needs.

A significant change to the home was the addition of a master bedroom to the back of the house as well as enlarging the rear patio area in an effort to open up the house to the picturesque wooded site. CDA’s concept was to rework the bedroom layout and connecting spaces of the bathroom, closet, and entry space to provide a graceful termination to a long corridor that then opens up to an enlarged bedroom with the tallest ceiling in the house. The exterior massing preserves a desired privacy for the bedroom while creating a stronger connection to the outdoors and achieving one of the client’s main goals of the project: retaining her ability to watch the sunrise over the river from her bed.
